I've always liked the artwork of Mark Rothko.
The colour palette used and the emotions that come out of his artwork are so powerful that I need to think and feel what type of colours I was going to play with to create this new artwork.
Mark Rothko's colour palette is sitting from light, bright to dark colours.
I decided to use acrylic Australian Sienna, Deep Rose Madder and Zinc White.
Using a binder and water for the acrylic to be transparent and create layers on the canvas.
Step 1: A table covered and a blank canvas
Step 2: the Australian Sienna acrylic mixed with binder and water to create the background of the canvas.
Step 3: After the background is dry, create the first 2 layers by applying Australian Sienna tinted (Zinc White added to Australian Sienna - tint: a colour that is softened by the addition of white) on the top part and Australian Sienna mixed with a small percentage of water to keep the opacity of the paint.
Step 4: Adding a runny Australian Sienna on top of both layers when the paint is still wet to create a texture.
Step 5: Adding Deep Rose Madder in the middle of the canvas. Adding more water to the acrylic to create a transparent colour.
When the Deep Rose Madder is starting to dry, applying another layer of Australian Sienna above, on top and below the centre.
Always have the canvas on the edge to help the paint to run down.
Hope you had enjoyed this demonstration.
Happy painting!!
